I hope everyone had a good start to the week!
Monday’s can definitely be hit or miss. :)
I wanted to share something that is quite personal.
I made a tough decision at the end of last school year. I decided to take a year off and stay home. It was EXTREMELY hard to walk away from the classroom for a little while, but it was also weighing heavily on me to stay.
I’m not sure about you guys, but the “extras” that have nothing to do with educating our sweet children were killing my passion and desire to teach. Between the stress, testing pressure (feeling pressure to teach to the test), support issues, behavior issues, tragic situations a few of my students were dealing with – all led to the feelings of despair.
Things had also gotten to the point where my husband told me last December that he didn’t even know who I was anymore. The stress and pressure had taken such a toll on me. He even mentioned that he missed my smile and the “old me.”
That was my turning point. I knew that these feelings would get in the way of me being able to give 100% to my students. It was also getting in the way of giving 100% to my husband/family.
After a tear-jerking conversation with my principal, I officially made my decision. I had to take time off to make sure I was mentally and emotionally in the right place. This has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. It has also (so far) turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I want to go back to the classroom, but I want to go back when I’m 100%. I know other teachers who have made this same decision and it’s sad. It’s depressing to know that the once lively, invigorated educators we once were are slowly losing that zest due to the stress and pressure of the “extras.”
It’s groups like Angela Watson’s “Encouraging Teachers” that help provide that support and encouragement I was missing. Please know that I want to help you guys and provide support as well. That has always been one of my goals on my blog. As educators, we need to stick together, work together, and lift each other up.
I promise to continue that support and encouragement!
I love you guys and want to be here for you!
