About a month ago, I was out on a Monday for a Lucy Calkins workshop. A colleague had been out the week before and her kids went bonkers while she was out. When she came back, she had to discuss "Sub Rules" with her class. I had never thought about that. So I sat my kids down, explained to them why I was going to be out, and we discussed expectations and appropriate behavior with a sub.
Here's what we came up with:
I posted it on the board and left it as a visual reminder for the kids on Monday. Needless to say, things went great that day. There were a few minor hiccups, but nothing I wasn't expecting. :) Do you discuss sub expectations before being out? Do you appoint any special helpers (outside of your normal classroom jobs)?

We do go over expectations, but I honestly never thought of charting it. What an easy but brilliant idea!! Thank you so much for sharing this, Dana!

Great idea! I always discuss them, but a visual would be so much more effective! Thanks for sharing!

I love this idea! It would be a nice visual for the sub to refer to during the day. The last time I was absent I "charted" the sub plans. I basically posted the schedule with what activity they would be doing. According to the sub it helped. The kids knew what acitivites I had planned.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Great idea to post the plans as well...no room for funny business! :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love the chart and sure is nice when people leave the info on children who get pulled out, but for some odd reason that rarely happens when I sub. They just come in and get them.
ReplyDeleteDana,
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you posted this! I'm going to be out for 4 consecutive days in a couple of weeks, and I'm dreading it! Besides the work of preparing for a sub, my kids tend to get a little carried away. I'm sure a visual will help!
