PIE anyone?

Sorry if I made you hungry!  I was talking about author's purpose.  :)  When an author writes a story or letter they are trying to persuade, inform, or entertain.  I shared a few books with my students, each book having a different purpose.  This is the anchor chart we created during our discussion about PIE:

What activities do you do to explain author's purpose?

Tomorrow I will share a persuasive story idea I shared with my students...hilarious!

  1. I like this - I'm having to teach some small groups on author's purpose - and we are being pushed with anchor charts - so this helps me kill two birds with one stone:) Thanks for the idea!

  2. We make an "Author's Pie" using 2 brown circles, a red circle, and a white "blob" shape. We staple them together this way: first brown circle, red circle, second brown circle (with pie crust top marks or cuts), white blob. On the brown circle, we write P: Persuade-to try to convince someone to agree with your point of view. On the red circle, we write I: Inform-to tell or teach something. On the brown top, we write E: Entertain-to entertain someone or make them laugh or enjoy the story. The blob (whipped creme) goes on top and we write "Author's Purpose Pie" on it. I'll make pictures and post them soon. :)
