Persuasive Writing

After discussing author's purpose (PIE) with my students, I knew I had to share a personal story that would really drive the point home.

Long story short:  I've always wanted a puppy, but my husband never shared that sentiment.  With a little research and a few amazingly persuasive facts, my husband couldn't say no this time!

When telling my students about the situation, I started off with a list of great facts I had found about Cockapoos.  (You'll see them in the pic below.  The ones with red stars are things I knew about the breed ahead of time.  The others are things I know now after having the puppy for a year.)

After listing this facts, I started my letter.  (Also seen in the picture below.)

Moral of this story:  you can get what you want if you're armed with the right facts!  Needless to say, my sweet Maggie is now one year old and my husband loves her to death!  And even half of my students' parents came to conferences saying that their kids wanted Cockapoos!  Guess I got my point across?!  :)

How do you teach persuasive writing?

  1. This week my students worked on persuasive writing. Their goal was to convince their teachers that they deserved a good behavior party. They enjoyed telling us how good they had been; some just wrote that they had not been too naughty. We all had a great time with the writing and are looking forward to our party on Friday!!

  2. Aww, your puppy is so cute! Love the idea!! I like your tactic of using facts. Last year I modeled writing a letter to my husband about how I wanted Tory Burch shoes. I talked to my students about how when you are asking for something, you have to address the negative arguments that the person might have. We talked about "If...Then..." Statements. For example, "I know these shoes are expensive, but if you buy them for me, then I won't need black shoes again for a few years." etc. That was my little tactic, and my letter worked, too! :)
