Clip Chart…HELP!

Marisa at iDream.iPlan.iTeach has an awesome question:

If you’re using this clip chart for behavior management, how do you plan on using it to formulate the students’ behavior grades?

I have the same exact question!  I made my own chart, got it laminated, and now it’s hanging up looking all cute in my classroom.  But I need to get a better idea of how I’m going to use this for a grade.

What do you think?  What would you do?  Please help us BOTH out and click on her blog button to share your thoughts.  Thanks in advance!  :)

  1. Christina Bainbridge has a form she uses to keep track of her students' behavior each day. She writes down the color they landed on if they are NOT on green at the end of the day – including going above the green. This way, she can use the data to write behavior grades accurately and share with parents if needed.

  2. Hi- I was just going to say the same thing as Abby. I use a spreadsheet where I can mark in each box the color code (P- purple, B- Blue, G- Green, Y- Yellow, R- Red, A- Absent etc)I also highlight the date above the day's behavior documentation if I am out and have a sub. It helps me weigh the "student's off day" differently. I also implemented several years ago a system called an "oops note" which documents what rules the child struggled with, any additional notes and is signed by the parent. I also have a spot on this form for parent conference requested or phone call etc so I can refer back to this form if needed. I make a mark next to the R (on the spreadsheet) with a plus or minus to let me know if I got the oops note returned and signed. So my entry on the spreadsheet would look like R+ or R-. I can use this information for report cards as well as parent conferences or with staffing team if there is a concern.

Sorry to get long winded- I hope this helps and makes sense

  3. I use a form similar to Christina Bainbridge's. I color in at the end of the day where each child ends up. We give behavior grades…so we take off 1 point if a child ends up on "Think about it", 2 points for "Teacher's Choice", and 3 points for "Parent Contact". Every child starts the grading period with 100 points and goes down from there.

  4. I do the same thing as mentioned above. I have a clipboard where at the end of each day I record the students behavior on a spreadsheet. I turned each color into a number. We have a standards based report card and not a grade based one. I actually have a student do this job. They record the number and move all of the clips back to green at the end of each day.

At the end of each week I send home a weekly report/newsletter for the parents to sign. This way parents are aware all along how their child is doing. And it makes report cads much easier.

  5. Wow! Thanks so much for blogging about my blog!

And thank you to all of you who responded!!

  6. I was also going to suggest Mrs. Bainbridge's form. Go here: http://www.bainbridgeclass.com/files.htm look under Clip Chart…Click Daily Behavior Checklist. :) I made my own this morning.

  7. Thanks, ladies! And Jen, I'm heading over to her site right now! :)

  8. I was going to still use ESNU for the bottom 4 colors. The top colors for good behavior I am just giving incentives like caught being good cards etc. Since we have those standard cards in our friday folders I have to stick to that basic system. That is is a good sheet to keep track of them above! Thanks Jen!

  10. Aww, thanks Jenaya! But I can't take credit for the chart pic…that's Marisa's! Mine is the same concept, but a little smaller. :)

  11. Ours is connected to a point system as well. To get the conduct grade we count the number of time a clip has been moved. If I can remember right, if it was moved (for whole grading period) 0-5 times = E, 6-9 times= s, 10-12 times=N and 13+=U

    Hope this helps!

  12. Dana,

Thanks again for posting about my dilemma! I figured out how I'm going to work my clip chart into my grading system. Feel free to check it out:

  13. I saw your idea and I LOVE it! I think it's very fair and keeps with the positive vibe of the clip chart!
